A. Savage’s world is rich with irreverent humor and keen naivete. Drawing from illustration and printmaking, his fervent output is marked with painterly restraint. Matte, pastel palettes lay flat like a classroom map, graphic and print-like, with outlines like the Mississippi – or soundwaves. Savage’s musical and visual work have overlapped and influenced each other over the course of many projects, from early punk bands in Denton, Texas to the Grammy-nominated art direction of Parquet Courts. This synesthetic approach to visual and audio work not only influences his format and composition, it is palpable in the directness of his paintings’ emotional impact. This destabilized world of familiar settings – the home, a lover’s bed, the city, in transit – deals in the poetics of platitudes, like a song lyric, where color sets the tone and lines tell the story.
The Past, Too, Is An Intruder is a series of new paintings, presented by Montana Simone at A-Pou’s Taste, the dumpling reincarnation of IDIO Gallery, from October 24th to 29th, 6AM to 9PM daily. Cash only. Opening Tuesday, October 24th from 7-10PM. A. Savage will be in conversation with Jonathan Campolo, fellow visual artist, on Thursday, October 26th, from 7-9PM.
A. Savage holds a BFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of North Texas. He has shown solo at Knockdown Center in Queens, at Gold und Beton in Köln, and at The Shop in Brooklyn. His artwork has been published in Lucky Peach, It’s Nice That, and Ad Hoc among others. He lives and works in New York, performs solo and with Parquet Courts, and is a co-founder of the record label Dull Tools. His new solo record came out on Friday.
